Countries
There are no countries, only an extended network of colonies linked by rail and cable through tunnels.

Colonies are autonomous, self-contained, and self-governing. They are small enough, with a population alike enough, that a simple, popular vote can decide policy.

There is a global (worldwide) council for managing inter-colony commerce, timekeeping, currency exchange, the rail system, a library, and the like. But little is controversial there.

Consider what it would take for one colony to go on a war of aggression against another. Many steps would have led up to it: craving for power, scheming, fomenting unrest, subverting the colony government, marshaling an army, developing weapons, creating the lie that there is something worth dying for, and vilifying the target colony.

Every one of those steps contradicts the mites' way of life.

Our anthem is John Lennon’s
Imagine. [1] Now there was a human who got it right — no countries, possessions, heaven or hell, reasons to kill or die — living for today in a brotherhood of man. We live in peace, honesty, and freedom, sharing all the world.

We also like Sarah Brightman's
Nella Fantasia. [2] She dreams of warmth, friendship, and justice — of soaring in spirit like a cloud.

It’s not a dream. Our Founders really pulled it off — dreamers though they were, begging for rice.

Our most important document, and the occasion for our top holiday, is the Pact the Founders signed. It gave us our purpose and our reason to exist. We spell
Pact with a capital “P,” even though, at the time, it was penciled on scratch paper.

It is traditional on
Pact Day to take an empty bowl and beg for rice. The plea is answered with a feast.
